Sanctuary Choir

Mission

“To provide excellence in music ministry for Sunday Worship Services, special programs, and local/foreign outreach.”

Description

The Evangel Sanctuary Choir, under the direction of Pastor Jesse G. Williams, Jr., is an adult choir for persons ages 18 and older. Weekly rehearsals include instruction on proper vocal technique, music theory, choir decorum, and most importantly, spiritual development.  This is a very unique choir because they sing a diverse repertoire of sacred music to include traditional and contemporary gospel, choral/classical standards, hymns, and spirituals.  The Sanctuary Choir is an integral part of the life of Evangel, singing at Worship Services most Sundays and providing music for annual programs at Easter, Christmas, and Missions Week.  Several members of this group have expanded their borders over the past 2 years, capturing Pastor Mitchell’s missions vision.  This choir has rendered several concerts and Services on two missions trips to Dominica and St. Maarten Islands.  Currently, the Sanctuary Choir has approximately 35 active members who love to use their musical gifts to glorify God.

Membership:

  • The first step for membership is to complete a choir application.  An application can be obtained from Minister Doris Hutton, Business Manager, or by clicking on Choir Application.

  • The second step for membership is the interview/audition process.  Prospective members are afforded the opportunity to sit down and discuss their musical experience, and the choir director states his expectations and the general membership guidelines.  At the end of the interview, the choir director will conduct an informal audition that includes a range, ear, and overall voice quality assessment.  Prospective members are usually asked to sing a song of their choosing.

  • The third and final step for membership after successful completion of the audition, is attending three consecutive rehearsals. At that time, new members are able to participate in the ministry of the choir.

Standards:

  • Rehearsals are held each Thursday 7:00 p.m.–9:00 p.m.  If the choir is not preparing for a production or special event, sometimes rehearsals begin at 7:30 p.m.  Advance notice is always given.

  • Extra rehearsals are often necessary when preparing for productions, concerts, or special events, particularly sectional rehearsals.

  • Regular attendance and punctuality are always expected.

  • Proper decorum (proper or fitting behavior) is expected at all times.

  • Choir members are expected to respect their position on the choir loft/ pulpit at all times.  This is sacred territory.

  • The practice of mutual respect is expected at all times, non-negotiable.

  • A group-minded spirit is expected at all times, always focusing on ministry and the good of the entire choir in stead of concern for displaying individual talent or satisfying personal interests.

  • All singers are expected to be open to constructive criticism.
